The Nintendo Switch, one of the best-selling consoles in gaming history, is officially making its return with its long-awaited new model. Nintendo shared the first official details of the Switch 2 through its official social media account and YouTube channel. While the new hybrid console carries similarities in design to the previous model, it also introduces significant innovations. Set to launch in 2025, the device features a larger screen, magnetic Joy-Con controllers, and enhanced ports.
Key Features of the Nintendo Switch 2
According to the promotional video shared by Nintendo, the Switch 2 will have a larger body compared to the original model. The Joy-Con controllers will magnetically attach to the console and will have a black design. Additionally, a new button has been added below the right Joy-Con, confirming previous leaks.

It is also claimed that the new generation of Joy-Con controllers may offer mouse-like usage. Moreover, the SL and SR buttons have been enlarged to improve the user experience.
The top of the device will feature a new USB-C port and a redesigned kickstand. The docking station will also have rounder edges. As with the previous model, Nintendo will continue offering a controller accessory where users can place the Joy-Con controllers.
In the promotional video, a scene featuring what is believed to be a new Mario Kart game was shown. However, Nintendo confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backward compatible with both physical and digital Switch games. Still, some Nintendo Switch games may not fully support the new console, as stated in the video.
Although Nintendo has not made a definitive statement regarding the release date, the console is expected to launch in 2025. Additionally, on April 2, 2025, a special Nintendo Direct broadcast will provide more details about the next-generation console.
Nintendo’s official announcement has largely confirmed the leaks that emerged in recent months. Since December, various accessory manufacturers had shared information about the Switch 2’s design. Dbrand had predicted the console’s dimensions and suggested that the Joy-Cons would attach magnetically. At CES 2025, Genki displayed a 3D-printed model believed to belong to Nintendo’s new console.
