Mercedes-Benz has launched a large-scale recall of more than 12,000 vehicles due to a fire risk for its electric SUV models EQA and EQB. Following inspections by market regulators in China, safety issues related to manufacturing have been identified in the high-voltage battery cells used in these models.
Mercedes is officially recalling these electric SUV models
A total of 12,308 vehicles produced between April 1, 2021 and October 31, 2023 were found to have a risk of overheating, posing a potential fire hazard.

The source of the problem is attributed to inconsistencies in the battery manufacturing process. It was determined that certain cells were not sufficiently safe during quality control stages, and the current battery management system could overload these cells, which could eventually lead to internal short circuits.
While battery systems in electric vehicles are considered one of the most critical components in the vehicle, such safety issues pose a serious reputational risk for brands. The recall process was made official after inspections by regulatory authorities in China.
Mercedes’ manufacturing partner in China, Beijing Benz, announced that it will update the software of its battery management system to fix the problem. This update will be applied free of charge at authorized services.
However, until the official process is completed, vehicle owners are advised not to charge their batteries above 80 percent. Limiting the battery level will help reduce the risk of fire by preventing the cells from being overloaded.
Mercedes-Benz has previously initiated recall processes for various models due to safety issues. In 2024, it was determined that the EQS and EQE SUV models could experience power loss while driving, and a recall decision was made for these vehicles.
In a period when competition in the electric vehicle market is increasing, such technical issues that Mercedes is facing are a great test in terms of the brand’s perception of reliability. So what do you think about this issue? You can share your views with us in the comments section below.
