Mercedes-Benz is preparing for a radical transformation of its steering system. The company is working on a new generation of ‘steer-by-wire’ technology that completely eliminates traditional mechanical linkages, and a new lever-type steering design. These innovations are planned to be included in all vehicles of the brand by 2026.
Mercedes to adopt new steering system
The steer-by-wire system removes the physical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels, and controls them only with electronic signals. Mercedes will first offer this system on the facelifted EQS model.

The electric sedan is expected to be introduced before 2026 and will pioneer the new steering system. After that, the next-generation S Series and some internal combustion engine models are likely to adopt the same system.
The advantages of the new system include high driving precision and increased manoeuvrability. Mercedes states that the steer-by-wire system offers softer steering responses, especially on long journeys, and provides a more agile driving experience in urban use.
The steering wheel will take the form of a centre stack, which will bring not only aesthetic but also functional changes. This design makes it easier for the driver to get in and out of the vehicle, while providing a clearer view of the instrument display on the dashboard.
Unlike the traditional circular form, this structure will also be more compatible with autonomous driving technologies. Mercedes emphasises that the system has the potential to be used as a game controller in the future.
Mercedes announced that it has tested the new steer-by-wire system for more than one million kilometres both on test tracks and in real traffic conditions. So what do you think about this subject? You can share your opinions with us in the comments section below.
