Meta has announced a submarine cable project that will change the flow of data worldwide. This initiative, called Project Waterworth, will break a record with its length of 50 thousand kilometers. Accordingly, it will be the longest submarine cable. The cable, which will be equipped with 24 fiber pairs, will connect the USA, India, Brazil, South Africa and many other regions.
Meta is investing billions of dollars in digital infrastructure: Project Waterworth
Meta engineers Gaya Nagarajan and Alex-Handrah Aimé emphasized that the project will strengthen the scale and reliability of the digital world. Three new ocean corridors will be opened with Project Waterworth and a connection will be provided to support artificial intelligence studies.
The company said that the cable can be laid up to 7 thousand meters deep with its first-of-its-kind routing technology. Accordingly, it stated that advanced techniques will be used especially in risky fault lines close to the shore.
Details such as the project’s cost, route and completion schedule have not yet been shared. However, industry reports indicate that the cost could be around $2 billion and that Meta will finance this investment entirely with its own resources.
Meta’s initiative also surpasses the 2Africa project, which was previously planned to be the world’s longest submarine cable, at 45,000 kilometers. The 2Africa project aimed to connect Africa, Europe and Asia, reaching 33 countries and 46 different points. Project Waterworth will expand Meta’s investment in digital infrastructure.
