The Mexican government has launched an international lawsuit against Google. The reason for the lawsuit is that the company shows the Gulf of Mexico to US users as “Gulf of America” in its map services. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum states that this change violates her sovereign rights.
Mexican government sues Google for “Gulf of America”
Sheinbaum argued that national territorial integrity cannot be eroded by such moves, saying, “The part corresponding to Mexico cannot be renamed. The part corresponding to Cuba cannot be renamed either.”

The Mexican government had previously sent official letters to Google requesting that this name change be abandoned. However, the company’s vice president of public policy and government relations, Cris Turner, responded in February and stated that they would not change this decision. Following this response, Mexico officially initiated the lawsuit process.
It is known that Google made the name change in accordance with an instruction given by US President Donald Trump as soon as he took office. This initiative of the Trump administration was also supported by a bill passed in the US House of Representatives last week. The new bill will make the name “America Gulf” official.
Google started using the name in question in its map services as of February 10, 2025. Apple made a similar update shortly after. However, some map providers such as MapQuest continue to resist this change.
