Microsoft quietly removed the misleading interface it had developed to trick Bing users into thinking they were on Google. Previously, when users searched for ‘Google’ on Bing, they were presented with a page resembling Google’s interface, complete with a special search bar, a Google Doodle-like image, and details resembling Google’s search screen. Microsoft has now abandoned this tactic to retain Bing users.
Users were shown a screen that automatically scrolled down to hide Bing’s search bar. After Reddit users noticed this and public backlash grew, Microsoft removed the misleading interface. The company has refrained from commenting on the decision.
Google had strongly criticized this move
Google Chrome manager Parisa Tabriz commented on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but Microsoft’s imitation of the Google homepage is another tactic in its history of confusing users and limiting their choices. The new year marks a new low for Microsoft.”

Microsoft has sometimes resorted to controversial methods to persuade users to set Bing and Microsoft Edge as their default. The company has previously manipulated Chrome download pages, published pop-up ads encouraging users to choose Bing, and even had some pop-ups labeled as ‘undesirable behaviors’ that Microsoft had to fix.
