Microsoft has decided to separate Teams from Office on a global level, according to a new Reuters report today. This move comes nearly half a year after the company did exactly the same thing for EU markets. At the time, it wanted to avoid a possible antitrust fine from the EU. So what is the real reason why the Microsoft Teams platform is now no longer an Office application?
Microsoft Teams is no longer an Office application
Since this event has gone global, Teams will no longer be packaged with Microsoft 365 and Office 365, of which it has been a part since 2017. The Teams application, which is also used in our country, especially in universities, is no longer an Office application.
A Microsoft spokesperson said the following about the issue: “To provide clarity for our customers, we are removing Teams, which we removed from the Office suite in the European Economic Area and Switzerland last year, from this suite for customers worldwide.”
“Doing so also takes into account feedback from the European Commission by giving multinational companies more flexibility when they want to standardize their purchases across geographies.”
That’s why Microsoft is offering Teams as a standalone product starting today, priced at $5.25 per user per month. But it’s worth noting that Enterprise-level pricing varies widely depending on country, currency and other factors. Office without Teams prices are now between $7.75 and $54.75, depending on the exact package you choose.
Existing customers can choose to continue their existing license agreements, renew, update or switch to new offerings if they wish. Microsoft’s competitors have long argued that such bundles of products and services give the company an unfair advantage, so it remains to be seen whether they will be able to compete better now.
