Midjourney, the creative powerhouse behind AI image generation, just launched its first AI video generation model: V1. The announcement sent shockwaves through the tech and creator communities on June 18, 2025.
Unlike traditional video tools, Midjourney V1 turns text prompts into realistic, dynamic video clips. Early users describe the output as “cinematic,” “fluid,” and “shockingly accurate.” Each clip runs for up to 10 seconds, offering stunning visuals and scene transitions.
The tool currently supports 16:9 landscape videos and is only available to Pro subscribers. Midjourney’s team confirmed they are gradually rolling out access via their official Discord server. Users can activate the /video
command in a dedicated test channel once enabled.
David Holz, Midjourney’s CEO, confirmed V1 uses a diffusion transformer architecture. This differs from competitors like Runway, Pika, and Luma AI, which rely on mixed latent or voxel systems. Holz emphasized a “new beginning” for AI-driven storytelling.
Creators reacted instantly. Within minutes, Discord flooded with experimental clips showcasing futuristic cities, animated characters, and surreal dreamscapes—all built from short text prompts. Some creators even tested narrative scenes, complete with camera movements.
Midjourney designed V1 to understand both camera direction and scene composition. Early footage showcases tracking shots, depth-of-field effects, and mood lighting, rivaling short film visuals. However, the team warned that audio, longform structure, and character consistency remain in early stages.
The launch positions Midjourney as a direct competitor to tools like Google Veo 3, OpenAI Sora, and Runway Gen-3. Yet, users praise V1 for its artistic depth and unique rendering style, qualities that made Midjourney images go viral.
Holz confirmed that updates will come monthly. V2 will likely expand clip length and improve motion realism. In the meantime, the community continues to flood social media with their creations, sparking a new wave of AI video creativity.
As the text-to-video race heats up, Midjourney V1 stands out as a visionary leap forward—and perhaps, the most creator-focused release yet.
