MSI uses 4090 chips in the 4070 Ti Super model: But why?

MSI is using 4090 chips in the 4070 Ti Super model to reduce increasing production costs. So, what is the reasoning behind this move?

One of the world’s leading technology manufacturers, MSI, is currently making headlines with quite an interesting revelation. The company has revealed that it is using the AD102 graphics chip, which is typically found in the RTX 4090, in its new RTX 4070 Ti Super graphics card model. So, why did the company choose this seemingly more expensive solution? Here are the details…

As you might guess, no company would want to use a more expensive material while producing a more economical product.

Under normal circumstances, RTX 4070 Ti Super models use the standard AD103 GPU chip. However, MSI’s new 4070 Ti Super model, named Ventus 3X Black, uses the AD102 GPU chip, which is also found in the 4090. But this chip is not the full-capacity version used in the 4090, offering the same performance.

MSI at COMPUTEX 2024: What will be showcased?

Nvidia modifies AD102 chips that are found to be defective or incomplete during testing and sells them to companies like MSI for integration into 4070 Ti Super models. This allows Nvidia to reduce production costs while clearing out inventory without any performance loss by producing the RTX 4070 Ti Super alongside other AD103 chip models.

Although this situation is not significant for the end user, as there is no change or loss in the performance of the product they receive, MSI’s purchase and use of these chips in new graphics card models suggests that there may be issues with Nvidia’s chip production. Of course, another thought is that MSI might be specifically requesting these chips.
