X (formerly Twitter) users in India were unable to access two important Reuters accounts over the weekend. The main Reuters account, which has 25 million followers on the platform, and the Reuters World account were blocked from India as of Saturday evening. However, the blockage was lifted a day later and the accounts were restored.
X blocks Routers in India!
During the blockage, users in India were greeted with the message “This account has been blocked in India in response to a legal request” when they tried to reach the @Reuters account. Reuters said in a statement that the company was trying to resolve the situation with X.

It was reported that the Reuters social media team had previously received a notification from X in May, and that the notification included information that some content had been restricted at the request of the Indian government, but did not specify which agency made the request or which content was targeted.
According to the statement from the Indian government, the blockage was not based on an official request. “There has been no request by the Indian government to block the Reuters account. We are working with X to resolve this issue,” a government spokesperson said.
X has previously had tensions with the Indian government over content removal and account ban requests. The company filed a lawsuit in March arguing that a website created by the Indian government gave public officials unlimited authority to remove content, constituting an unlawful censorship mechanism. The Indian government said the site was only used to report harmful content online.
The platform went through a similar process in Brazil last year, where it was temporarily banned after a dispute with the country’s Supreme Court. The latest incident highlights X’s ongoing disputes with governments globally over content control and access policies.
