Instagram announced an unexpected customization option on Wednesday. The platform introduced new options for the app icon users use on their phones’ home screens. However, this feature comes with a significant limitation. Currently, the ability to change the classic logo is only available to users registered as “Teen Accounts.” Adult users cannot benefit from these new icons.
Instagram icons are changing only for teen users
Teens registered on Instagram have access to six different versions of the classic camera logo. These options include neon, clear glass, fire, flowers, green slime, and chrome designs. To access these icons, young users must tap the camera logo at the top of their feed. They can select their preferred design by accessing the icon change settings from the drop-down menu.

The feature’s limitation to a specific age group has caused confusion on social media. Many adult users questioned why they weren’t also offered the new icons. Instagram’s decision may be driven by concerns about protecting its brand identity. It’s suspected that the company is concerned that too many users will reduce the familiar icon’s recognition.
A representative from Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has not yet responded to requests for comment. This silence raises uncertainty about whether the feature will be opened to adults in the future. It’s currently unclear whether the company is using this step as a test or whether it will become a permanent teen exclusive.
This latest update follows a series of innovations Instagram has released this year. In recent months, the platform has emphasized AI-driven features and frequently requested tools. These include AI-based personalized ads and moderation tools that allow parents to block access to chatbots.
Instagram’s decision to limit these new icons to younger users remains controversial. So, do you like these new icon designs? Do you think this feature should be available to all users?
