Tesla has announced plans for an update for the Model S and Model X this year. Updated versions of the Model S and Model X are on the way, the company’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy said on the Ride the Lightning podcast.
Tesla to update Model S and Model X this year
Tesla renewed and launched these two models in 2021. However, this design update did not have the expected effect in boosting sales figures. The company originally targeted annual production of 100,000 units for the Model S and Model X, but that figure fell by about half last year.
This drop is linked to increased competition from brands such as Lucid, Rivian, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, as well as Tesla’s own internal competition. The popularization of the Model 3 and Model Y models had a negative impact on Model S and Model X sales.
Lars Moravy stated that Tesla still has big plans for these two models and said, “Take your time with the updates. The update a few years ago included bigger changes than most people anticipated. This year, we’re going to show Model S and Model X a little more love.”
Moravy did not elaborate on the details of the update, but it is expected to include some of the changes made to the new Model 3 and Model Y. This could mean more efficient battery management, aerodynamic improvements and some design changes to the interior. There’s also the possibility that changes will be implemented in the Model S and Model X, such as Tesla bringing back the turn signal lever for the Model Y.
Tesla generally refrains from announcing new model updates or changes in advance. The company keeps such announcements to a minimum to avoid what is known as the “Osborne effect”, where customers are discouraged from buying existing models to wait for the new model.
