The new Windows 11 update is causing issues with Blu-Ray and TV apps on PCs. The recently released KB5064081 and subsequent 24H2 updates are causing users to experience freezing, black screens, and DRM errors, particularly when playing protected content.
Windows 11 update breaks some apps
Microsoft has officially acknowledged the issue and announced that affected apps are failing to play copyrighted content like Blu-Ray and Digital TV. This month’s Windows 11 updates have previously been plagued by other issues.

The KB5063878 update caused SSD failures during large file transfers. Additionally, installation errors, UAC warnings, and malfunctions in Windows recovery functions were reported in some software after the August updates.
While the company has addressed some of these issues with patches, the issue with the Blu-Ray and TV apps has not yet been resolved. Microsoft has announced that a fix will be released in future updates, but it is unclear when this fix will be released.
This issue currently only affects physical media playback applications like Blu-Ray or live TV. Online streaming services like Netflix or Disney+ are not affected.
The persistence of the issue is particularly frustrating for users who have home theater setups and watch Blu-Ray movies on their computers.
While users are waiting for an immediate patch for their media apps, the fact that digital streaming platforms are unaffected is a small relief. However, the general consensus is that Microsoft should prevent such bugs with more rigorous testing processes.
