Nintendo’s next-generation game console, the Switch 2, achieved significant success in its first month, reaching 3.1 million units sold in its first month. Sales in Japan and the US played a decisive role in the console’s record-breaking sales.
Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks Sales Record
In Japan, the Switch 2 sold over 1.5 million units in just one month. This figure made it the fastest-selling gaming hardware in the country’s history. The new model, which tripled the sales of the original Switch during the same period, also attracted considerable attention during the pre-sale period. According to Bloomberg analyst Gearoid Reidy, 2.2 million Japanese gamers pre-registered digitally before launch.

A similar pattern emerged in the US market. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella reported that the Switch 2 reached 1.6 million units sold in the country in its first month. This performance surpassed the record set by the PlayStation 4 in 2013 for “fastest-selling game console in the US.” Thus, the Switch 2 quickly surpassed the sales figures achieved by both Sony and Nintendo’s previous consoles. Nintendo had set a sales target of 15 million units for a 10-month period.
As the console’s global sales chart continues to rise, the company’s financial report and total sales figures, to be released on August 1, 2025, are expected to set new records.
The Switch 2 distinguishes itself from its predecessor in terms of hardware. Featuring an enlarged body, the console comes with a new Joy-Con design with magnetic ties. The 1080p LCD screen, featuring a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR support, features thinner bezels.
The device provides 4K output in docked mode, has two USB-C ports, and 256GB of internal storage. Storage expansion is only possible with microSD Express cards. Battery life varies between 2 and 6.5 hours depending on usage scenarios.
The technical innovations offered by the new generation Switch and the sales momentum it has gained in the market indicate that the console will maintain its leadership among gaming hardware until the end of the year.
