A fascinating detail about Nintendo’s upcoming console, Switch 2, has come to light. A patent filed in the US in July 2023 and disclosed publicly on December 31, 2024, points to technology that could enhance the console’s graphical performance. Similar to Sony’s PSSR technology in the PS5 Pro, this feature could significantly boost visual quality and performance.
Nintendo Switch 2 to use machine learning!
The patent, titled “Machine Learning Image Transformation Systems and Methods,” resembles Nvidia’s DLSS technology. This system allows for higher resolution graphics rendering without requiring substantial hardware power, thereby enhancing performance without compromising visual quality. This feature is expected to give Switch 2 an edge in competing with Microsoft and Sony’s more powerful consoles.
Given the expectation that Switch 2 will have relatively limited hardware power, this technology could enable the console to maximize efficiency from its processing capabilities.
The patent also hints at the ability to reduce game sizes. Considering that Switch cartridges have a maximum capacity of 32GB, this technology could allow larger games to run on smaller physical media. This would enable users to experience more expansive and content-rich games on the Switch 2.
Nintendo has also confirmed backward compatibility for Switch 2. This means that the extensive library of games from the current Switch will be playable on the new console, ensuring players won’t lose access to their existing collection when upgrading.
