The European Union’s new regulations continue to spark fundamental changes in the tech world. According to recent reports, the Nintendo Switch 2 will specifically feature a removable battery for the European market. Nikkei reports that Nintendo is making this hardware revision to comply with a 2023 EU regulation that mandates portable batteries in devices must be easily replaceable by users without the need for specialized tools.
EU Laws Reshape Nintendo Switch 2 Design
While the law was approved in 2023, the removable battery requirement will officially take effect on February 18, 2027. This design shift will not only affect the main console but also the Joy-Con controllers. Consequently, European users will be able to refresh their device batteries without using chemical solvents or extra specialized equipment. While it remains unclear why Nintendo isn’t offering this globally from the start, experts suggest the design could expand to global markets if similar laws are passed in the United States or Japan.

As Nintendo takes this mandatory step in its second-largest market, it is also grappling with other commercial challenges. Although the Switch 2 reached record sales in its launch week, software sales have seen a significant decline. This drop is attributed to rising storage costs caused by the AI-driven chip crisis, higher game prices, and a lack of compelling launch titles. Additionally, Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government over customs duties, demanding a $200 billion refund including interest.
Impact Beyond Gaming: A New Standard for Tech
The EU’s decision will not be limited to Nintendo. Nearly all portable battery-powered devices, including smartphones, laptops, and wireless earbuds, will be impacted. Sony making battery replacement easier in DualSense controllers and the improved repairability of the new MacBook Neo prove that this shift is already underway.
