Nintendo has issued an important warning to Switch and Switch 2 users following the ongoing heat waves. The Japanese company stated that operating the game consoles in temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) could cause overheating and performance issues. This statement was shared publicly on the company’s official X account due to the above-average temperatures in Japan.
Nintendo devices may experience problems in extreme heat
According to Nintendo’s technical guidelines, Switch models are designed to operate in temperatures between 5 and 35 degrees Celsius (45 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit). Conditions outside this range can overheat system components and lead to long-term hardware failure. The company has stated that playing games outdoors for extended periods in direct sunlight is particularly risky.

In July, isolated cases of overheating reported by some users also came to the company’s attention. Temporary system shutdowns and performance drops due to overheating have been reported, particularly while playing graphically demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077. However, Nintendo added that these incidents have not been a widespread problem so far.
The release reminded users to protect their devices from direct sunlight, limit playtime in high temperatures, and ensure they are used in environments with adequate ventilation. The company also emphasized that users should not block their console’s ventilation holes and use the device on hard, flat surfaces rather than soft surfaces.
Nintendo’s warning applies not only to Japan but to all regions experiencing similar heat waves. In countries like Turkey, which experience temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius during the summer months, adhering to these recommendations is crucial for both device lifespan and safe use.
