The Nissan GT-R 35, a dream of nearly everyone since childhood, will no longer be produced. Having rolled its last car off the production line, Nissan announced that it is bidding farewell to this model. However, other statements have indicated that it is not bidding farewell to the iconic GT-R series forever, but rather that it will evolve. Here are the details.
The Future of the GT-R: Hybrid or All-Electric?
Nissan has officially confirmed the return of its iconic GT-R. Following the departure of the R35 from the production line, CEO Ivan Espinosa announced that the vehicle, nicknamed Godzilla, will “evolve and re-emerge” in the future.

After bidding farewell to the R35, Nissan’s CEO gave hope to fans worldwide, saying, “This isn’t a farewell to the GT-R forever.” Nissan’s goal is to ensure the GT-R name returns one day and “reimagine it for a new generation.”
While there are no definitive plans yet for the vehicle’s future powertrain, Nissan North America Senior Vice President Ponz Pandikuthira told The Drive that the next GT-R will be a hybrid rather than an all-electric model. However, Nissan also unveiled an all-electric GT-R a few years ago with the Hyper Force EV concept.
Nissan’s partnership with LiCAP Technologies to mass-produce solid-state batteries could pave the way for an all-electric GT-R in the future. With the company aiming to launch its first EV powered by a solid-state battery in 2028, it seems likely that the GT-R will resurface as a plug-in hybrid by the time this technology becomes available.
Following these announcements, we understand that the vehicle, expected to be called Godzilla, isn’t ready yet and we’ll have to wait a few more years.
