The transition to 5G technology, a critical milestone in Turkey’s digital transformation, is accelerating. According to recent statements by Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, the number of 5G phones in Turkey has reached 22 million. This figure clearly illustrates the current situation ahead of the upcoming 5G tender and the official rollout expected in April 2026.
Turkey’s 5G Phone Number and Subscriber Expectations
In a detailed statement, Minister Uraloğlu stated that there are approximately 85 million phone subscribers in Turkey. Therefore, the 22 million devices equipped with 5G support represent only a quarter of the total number of users. He also emphasized that approximately 63 million more 5G-compatible phones need to be sold in the market to ensure universal use of 5G technology.

The Ministry will officially hold the 5G tender on October 16. The starting price for the tender has been announced as $2.125 billion. Most importantly, the official launch of 5G in Turkey is expected in April 2026. This process will strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and increase mobile internet speeds.
With the new era, 2G subscribers will be required to replace both their phones and SIM cards. Minister Uraloğlu clarified this change. He also added that 2G and 3G contracts expiring in 2029 will be automatically extended with the 5G tender. This decision aims to ensure uninterrupted service for subscribers using older technologies.
