Nvidia is expanding beyond AI chips and entering the autonomous vehicle market with its own Nvidia robotaxi service. Announced by CEO Jensen Huang at CES 2026, the service is planned to launch in 2027, marking the company’s most ambitious move into the transportation sector yet.
How the Nvidia Robotaxi Service Will Compete
The new service will initially launch with limited availability, allowing Nvidia and its unnamed partner to solidify the system’s foundation. The vehicles will feature Level 4 autonomous driving technology, enabling them to operate without human intervention in specific, pre-defined areas. This strategic entry positions Nvidia as a direct competitor to established players like Alphabet’s Waymo, Amazon’s Zoox, and Tesla.
While Nvidia has not yet disclosed the launch cities or its partner, the company already has strong ties with industry giants like Mercedes-Benz and transportation leader Uber. The automotive and robotics division, though currently representing a small fraction of total revenue with $592 million in the last quarter of 2025, is seen by the company as a key area for future growth.
The Technology Powering Autonomous Driving
Nvidia supports automakers with its powerful Drive AGX Thor computer, valued at around $3,500, and advanced simulation software. This technology is already proving its capabilities. For instance, a 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA model equipped with Nvidia tech successfully navigated 90% of a complex San Francisco route without a driver in recent tests.

Furthermore, to accelerate development across the industry, CEO Jensen Huang also introduced Alpamayo, a new open-source AI model. The company is also releasing a massive dataset containing 1,700 hours of driving data from 25 countries to aid developers worldwide.
