NVIDIA, which is by far the leader in artificial intelligence chips, does not seem to want competition in this market. The server designs prepared by Microsoft disrupted the company’s plans. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang is pressuring Microsoft to use its chip in its servers.
NVIDIA and Microsoft clash over artificial intelligence chips
According to allegations emerging in the US, there is an AI chip dispute between NVIDIA and Microsoft. Sources revealed that the Blackwell B200 chips customized by Microsoft have caused controversy at NVIDIA.
NVIDIA Vice President Andrew Bell requested Microsoft to use a server design that would work with B200 GPUs. However, Microsoft said that a server configuration specific to NVIDIA would restrict the steps taken by competitors. In this context, he stated that he will create his own servers.
Microsoft’s resistance revealed that it does not want competition in the artificial intelligence market. NVIDIA, which has reached the title of the world’s most valuable company, wants to make other technology giants dependent on itself in this field.
It doesn’t even allow companies like AMD and Intel to include artificial intelligence chips in servers. This has led to tensions with Microsoft. The hardware giant drew attention by controlling how customers use the AI chip.
It is not possible for big companies like Microsoft to stick to a single solution in the long run. Although the B200 AI chip is very powerful, it will not power Microsoft’s servers on its own.
