OpenAI has taken a significant step toward expanding the desktop capabilities of its AI assistant, ChatGPT. The company announced the acquisition of Software Applications Incorporated, the developer of the innovative OpenAI Mac app Sky. This acquisition paves the way for deeper integration of AI into the macOS operating system.
Why is Sky so important to OpenAI?
Sky was designed as a desktop AI assistant. The app understands the content on your screen and helps users perform tasks like writing, planning, or coding. This means ChatGPT is evolving from a mere responsive chatbot into a proactive assistant.

One of the most striking aspects of the acquisition is the SAI team’s heritage. This team consists of the developers behind the “Workflow” app, which was previously acquired by Apple and evolved into “Shortcuts.” This experienced team is now bringing all of its expertise to OpenAI. The agreement will see the entire SAI team join OpenAI.
Nick Turley, President of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, stated that this move accelerates their vision. Turley said, “We’re building a future where ChatGPT doesn’t just respond to your commands; it helps you get things done.” SAI CEO Ari Weinstein also expressed their excitement about bringing the Sky vision to hundreds of millions of users with this merger.
This acquisition is the latest move to strengthen OpenAI’s presence in the Apple ecosystem. The company recently announced its “ChatGPT Atlas” browser for Mac and is working on new hardware with former Apple design chief Jony Ive. These developments demonstrate OpenAI’s commitment to integrating AI into our everyday tools.
