OpenAI has started offering o1-mini free of charge to all users. Previously only available to Plus and Team subscribers, the model can now be tested by free ChatGPT users on desktop and mobile devices.
How to use OpenAI o1-mini for free?
Among OpenAI’s new language models, o1 and o1-mini stand out with their ability to solve complex problems. The company claims that o1 performs at the level of a PhD student in science, math and technical fields.
In comparative tests, o1 outperformed GPT-4o by scoring 83 percent on a physics exam. He also placed in the top 100 in computer programming competitions. In addition, o1 solves problems step by step using a method known as ‘chain of thought’, which makes the model more similar to human reasoning.
For those who do not know, o1-mini is a smaller version of the o1 model. Free users can test o1-mini by selecting it from the ChatGPT Auto menu in the ChatGPT interface. In addition, o1-mini is available on the mobile application using the Alpha [gpt-4o] model.
On the other hand, the pricing of the o1 Preview model was also a topic of discussion: It costs $15 for one million entry tokens and $60 for one million exit tokens. This is about three times the price of the GPT-4o model.
With this decision, OpenAI wants to bring its new language models to a wider audience. The company aims to improve its models by getting more user feedback and make artificial intelligence more accessible.
