OpenAI, which has an important place in the field of artificial intelligence, is preparing to take steps to produce its own artificial intelligence hardware. The company aims to get rid of being dependent on the hardware of another company like Nvidia in order to produce customized solutions.
OpenAI starts negotiations to produce its own processors
According to Tom’s Hardware, OpenAI is currently in talks to produce its own AI processors. These processors will most likely be Neural Network Processing Units (NPUs).
NPUs, processors dedicated to AI-related tasks, are found in AI computers. In the same way that a GPU frees the processor from graphics processing tasks, an NPU frees the processor from the task of processing information because it is specifically designed to deal with AI operations.
If this plan comes to fruition, OpenAI will likely drop Nvidia’s hardware and replace it with its own NPUs. It might even start selling or leasing the hardware to companies that want to make it available to the public. While it’s unlikely to see OpenAI-branded hardware in consumer stores, it’s not impossible.
Nvidia has distinguished itself in the AI race, becoming the third most valuable company in the US. When a company wanted to enter the AI space, it bought Nvidia hardware. Even OpenAI and Microsoft’s AI initiatives were built on Nvidia hardware.
But companies now want to avoid being dependent on Nvidia hardware and produce their own solutions. But this is not a problem for Nvidia. The company has responded to these hardware moves by launching Chat With RTX, its own AI chatbot that provides solutions using GPUs in existing systems. So while Nvidia may lose its position in the AI hardware market going forward, it’s not out of the race.
