OpenAI is allocating significant processing power to its AI model ChatGPT to provide more humane and polite responses. Simple responses produced in response to polite expressions such as “Thank you” or “Please” result in millions of dollars of resource usage annually.
ChatGPT’s polite responses are expensive
According to calculations; polite expressions frequently conveyed by users during chats cause serious energy consumption in data centers. ChatGPT’s generation of natural-looking responses such as “You’re welcome” or “I’m always here” means an average consumption of 40 to 50 milliliters of water and a large energy expenditure for each. Although most of these responses seem short, complex processing processes are running in the background.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that such responses are an important part of the natural chat experience and that this makes human-AI interaction more friendly. Altman states that they are aware of the costs, but that user experience should not be compromised.
Although it is technically possible to pre-program short answers and make them fixed, such an approach can lead to a loss of naturalness in the real-time chat flow. Research conducted by MIT and OpenAI found that users use polite expressions instinctively, not consciously, when interacting with ChatGPT.
According to experts, this situation is considered a sign of the formation of an emotional bond between humans and artificial intelligence systems. So what do you think about this? You can share your views with us in the comments section below.
