Perplexity, a leading company in the field of artificial intelligence, has introduced its next-generation browser, Comet. Unlike traditional web browsing, Comet offers a platform that seamlessly interacts with users and performs actions on their behalf. Perplexity has currently made the browser available only to Perplexity Max subscribers, who pay $200 per month. It is planned to be rolled out to the wider public via invitation.
Comet, the AI-powered browser, has been introduced.
Comet is based on Perplexity’s own AI technology. Searches made on the browser provide users with direct AI responses generated from information gathered from across the web. Perplexity has also been selected as the browser’s default search engine.
Comet is currently available for download only for Windows and macOS users. When installing the browser, the user’s existing add-ons, bookmarks, and settings can be transferred with a single click. Another notable feature of the browser is its ability to perform actions on their behalf.
Actions such as booking a hotel, purchasing a product, arranging a meeting, or sending an email can be performed through the browser’s integrated AI assistant. This assistant can also explain content on the screen and facilitate user interaction with it.
Comet’s launch is seen as part of Perplexity’s broader push into the technology space. The company previously stated its interest in acquiring Google Chrome if it went on sale.
This announcement becomes even more striking when considered alongside Google’s ongoing antitrust lawsuits. Perplexity has also partnered with Motorola to include its AI assistant pre-installed on the new Razr phones.
The new browser aims to offer a significant alternative to Google’s long-standing dominance in the browser market. Comet’s AI-powered interaction model is positioned as one of the first examples of redefining the concept of a web browser.
