The digital gaming giant has come to the fore with a curious community request. Thousands of users with extensive libraries are demanding an official Steam random game button from Valve because they’re struggling to decide what to play.
The indecisiveness problem is growing: A Steam random game button is essential
A petition launched on Reddit, which quickly garnered over 8,600 supporters, addresses a common concern among PC gamers. According to a March 2025 report by Newzoo, players spend most of their time playing older games, but their ever-growing libraries are causing choice paralysis (indecision). The community is calling for a simple “chance” button integrated into library shelves to address this issue.

Valve currently offers an AI-powered “Play Next” feature. However, users are unhappy that this system only recommends games they’ve never played and is algorithmic. Players are expecting a mechanism that will randomly select from all their owned games, similar to the “shuffle” feature on music lists.
Comments from the software industry suggest that this feature would be a breeze for Valve. It’s stated that a simple hashing algorithm written in C++ (like Fisher-Yates) could easily be added to the platform. While external sites like SteamDB currently offer this service, users want to experience it directly within the app.
So, do you think the Steam random game feature, which players have been requesting, is necessary? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
