The end of the road is in sight for Sony’s PlayStation 4, which was launched in 2013 and has become one of the most successful consoles in the gaming world with over 117 million units sold to date. The company has officially stopped selling all PS4 models in Japan. Sony’s decision is considered part of the gradual abandonment of older generation hardware.
PlayStation 4 sales are officially ending
Although PlayStation 4 was launched in 2013 at the same time as Xbox One, it has achieved great success thanks to Sony’s strong game library and hardware advantages. Home to many legendary games such as God of War, The Last of Us Part II, Bloodborne, Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Zero Dawn, PS4 has become a favorite of gamers, especially with its single-player story-focused productions.

PS4 has managed to remain competitive for many years not only with its popular games but also with its powerful technical features. The PS4 Pro model, which offers image support up to 4K resolution, was an important innovation that extended the life of the console. However, with the launch of the PlayStation 5 in 2020, older generation hardware has slowly begun to fade into the background.
Sony had begun to gradually reduce PS4 production following the launch of the PlayStation 5. First, the production of the PS4 Pro model was stopped, then the production of the standard model was discontinued. In recent years, only the PS4 Slim model has continued to be produced. However, with the decrease in stocks, it was announced that official PS4 sales in Japan have been completely terminated.
The increasing popularity of the PlayStation 5 and the increase in production costs were the biggest factors in this decision. With Sony depleting its last remaining stocks, it is expected that PlayStation 4 sales will completely end in other countries in the coming period.
