Since the PS5 only has one USB-A port in the front, many players plugged their fighting game controllers into one of the available ports at the back. Considering these systems often remained on for hours due to the elimination format in which competitors played, the PS5s were likely heating up throughout the day.
As a result, the PS5’s temperatures rise high enough to melt the plastic within the USB ports, likely due to the heat being expelled from the back of the system. Some users experiencing the issue reported that their cables fused with the PS5’s USB ports and when pulled out, they brought the entire port with them. Neither Sony nor Evo has provided any official statement on the matter.
It’s worth noting that some users might have used old, unauthorized converters on the PS5 due to lack of cross-platform compatibility, which could potentially introduce issues stemming from the use of unauthorized hardware. It remains uncertain whether the affected USB ports are exclusive to faulty PS5 units.
