Hardware leaks regarding the next-generation consoles, PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix, are becoming clearer. According to experts at Digital Foundry, Microsoft’s next-gen console will technically be more powerful; however, the difference may not translate into a significantly different experience for players. During actual gameplay, the general performance gap between the two systems is expected to be largely unnoticeable.
PlayStation 6 May Lead Due to Lower Production Costs
Contrary to some reports, reliable leaker Kepler_L2 argues that the hardware disparity between the two consoles will be larger than in the current generation. Leaks suggest the Xbox Project Helix processor will offer 25% higher TFlops, 33% faster front-end processing speeds, 140% more cache, and 20% higher memory bandwidth.
However, this hardware superiority won’t result in massive real-world differences, such as one console hitting 60 FPS while the other struggles at 30 FPS, or only one supporting Path Tracing. The new Xbox will likely run games at a slightly higher internal resolution or with marginally better quality settings. Thanks to advanced image upscaling technologies like PSSR and AMD FSR Diamond, the visual quality gap on screen will be nearly eliminated.

Manufacturing Challenges and Market Strategy
With performance differences narrowed by software, price becomes the most critical factor in the console war. Xbox’s design, featuring a die size larger than 400mm² and potentially utilizing a chiplet (multi-chip) design, significantly increases production costs. In contrast, the PlayStation 6 is expected to use a smaller, monolithic chip—similar in size to the PS5 Pro—making it cheaper to manufacture.
Due to these high costs, the new Xbox is expected to retail at a higher price, which could limit its potential sales. It is also noted that for Sony, delaying the PlayStation 6 would be more expensive than the cost of extra RAM. Consequently, both consoles are currently targeted for a 2027 release.
