According to a statement made by former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida, porting PlayStation exclusive games to the PC platform has become a very profitable business for Sony. Yoshida said that this move was like printing money.
Sony’s PlayStation games are worth their weight in gold on PC
Yoshida, who served as president of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, said that porting games to PC allows the company to reach new audiences in regions where consoles are not popular. “Releasing on PC does a lot of things: it reaches a new audience that doesn’t own a console,” the former executive said.

In addition to expanding the player base, Yoshida emphasized that porting games to PC is much more economical than developing an entirely new game. “It also generates additional revenue because it’s much cheaper to make a PC version than to create a new game. It’s almost like printing money,” he said.
This strategy has been very successful for Sony. The company has gradually ported PlayStation games to PC in recent years. Titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, Marvel’s Spider-Man and The Last of Us Part 2 have grown rapidly on the PC platform.
While the performance of the PC versions has been problematic in some cases, Yoshida said that the success of Helldivers 2 shows the potential of this strategy. The game became Sony’s fastest selling title thanks to its performance on PC.
Yoshida also acknowledged that the requirement to have a PlayStation Network account on the PC versions hindered the success of those versions.
