In a business presentation this morning, PlayStation co-CEO Hermen Hulst reassessed the strategy for releasing PlayStation games on the PC platform. Live service games will launch on PS5 and PC on the same day, while single-player games will come to PC later. Here are the details!
PlayStation explained its strategy for releasing exclusive games on PC
Hermen Hulst explained that PlayStation’s strategy of releasing single-player games later on the PC platform is intended to attract more people to the PlayStation platform.
“On the live service side, we release our games at the same time, on PS5 and PC on the same day. But we’re taking a more strategic approach with our big single-player, story-driven games that have been the backbone of PlayStation studios in recent years and in our history, and we’re introducing these great franchises to new audiences.”
Hulst also said that PlayStation’s efforts to expand its major franchises into other media serve a similar purpose. “As you’ve seen with the HBO series of The Last of Us or the Gran Turismo movie, these efforts are attracting new players to our franchises,” he said.
PlayStation’s strategy was already evident with the simultaneous release of the live-service multiplayer Helldivers 2 on PS5 and PC earlier this year, and Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut coming to PC this month, years after its PS5 release. However, this is the first time we’ve officially heard about PlayStation’s approach.
PlayStation’s two-pronged strategy aims to appeal to a wide audience of gamers by bringing live-service games to PC immediately, while luring gamers to their platform by releasing single-player games first on the PlayStation platform.
