Huawei, one of the leading names in the technology world, has been facing sanctions imposed by the United States in recent years. In fact, the company has even experienced downsizing as a result. According to the latest developments, the European country Portugal may also impose sanctions on Huawei in the near future. Here’s the reason behind it…
Portugal could impose sanctions on Huawei! But why?
Portugal’s High Cybersecurity Council made a noteworthy statement last Thursday. In this statement, it was mentioned that companies like Huawei, which are of Chinese origin, pose a high risk for wireless network connections in the country.
Following this announcement, Portugal proposed to local operators that equipment for 5G technology should not be sourced from non-European Union (EU), NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), and OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries.
If the Portuguese government accepts the proposal presented by the council, Chinese companies would be banned from participating in 5G infrastructure projects in the country. In an interview regarding the issue, a Huawei spokesperson stated:
“Huawei has no prior knowledge of or involvement in this matter. Over the past 20 years, Huawei has worked with Portuguese operators to develop wireless networks and provide quality services that connect millions of people. We will continue to comply with all applicable laws and regulations and serve our Portuguese customers and partners who trust in our products and services.”
If Portugal imposes sanctions on Huawei and bans its participation in connectivity infrastructure projects, other European countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania could also make similar decisions. We will see this unfold in the coming days.
