5G technology has been rapidly spreading in the smartphone market in recent years: What was only seen in flagship models a few years ago is now appearing in mid-segment and even entry-level smartphones from manufacturers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.
Qualcomm and MediaTek battle it out for industry leadership
This fast-growing market naturally leads to intense competition between various companies. Chipset manufacturers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek are fighting fiercely to be included in more smartphone models. So who is ahead in this ongoing battle? Which company has better momentum than the other?
A recent study by Omdia reveals which chipset manufacturer is more successful in the 5G market. According to the report, Qualcomm, which has long dominated the market thanks to its popularity in flagship phones, has now been overtaken by MediaTek.
If we take a look at the numbers, while the number of smartphones using MediaTek’s 5G processors was 34.7 million in the first quarter of 2023, this figure increased to 53 million in the first quarter of 2024, an increase of 53 percent. During the same period, shipments of devices with Snapdragon processors remained almost flat, rising from 47.2 million units to just 48.3 million units.
In terms of market share, MediaTek managed to outpace its rival in this area as well. Accordingly, MediaTek currently leads the market, supplying processors to 29.2 percent of the devices on the market. Apple follows with 27 percent and Qualcomm with 26.5 percent. Other chipset manufacturers such as Samsung, Google, Huawei and UniSoC account for only 17 percent of total shipments.
