Reddit, one of the oldest social media platforms, has taken a significant step to enhance user safety and information accuracy. The platform, known for its anonymity, announced it has begun testing a new Reddit verified profile feature that allows certain individuals and businesses to verify their identities.
How will the Reddit verified profile feature work?
According to the company’s statement, a limited alpha testing process has officially begun. This update adds a gray checkmark to usernames. This feature aims to make it easier to distinguish fake accounts from those of experts hosting AMA (Ask Me Anything) events, journalists reporting news, or brands making official announcements.

The testing process is currently only being conducted with a small group of public figures and trusted business partners selected by Reddit. Users cannot request verification at this stage; the system is entirely by invitation only.
Reddit emphasizes that it has not abandoned its principle of pseudonymity, which is part of the platform’s DNA. The company stresses that the verification system is entirely optional and voluntary, and is not designed as a status symbol. The main goal is to lighten the burden of manual identity verification for moderators and bring clarity to the community.
Verified individual users will gain access to “Reddit Pro” tools in addition to the gray tick. For businesses, the existing “official” watermark will be replaced with the new gray checkmark. Brands will also be able to use new profile flairs to highlight important announcements or events on their profiles.
