Renault and Volvo Group have announced a partnership to produce electric Van models. Merging with French shipping company CMA CGM Group, the automotive manufacturers have launched a new electric Van initiative called Flexis.
Renault and Volvo will produce electric vans with Flexis
According to the statement made by Renault CEO Luca de Meo, Flexis is setting out to become the “Tesla of commercial vehicles”. In this context, the vehicles to be built on a flexible platform aim to transform the van industry with a modular structure.
The first production of Flexis will start at Renault’s factory in France. The minibuses are expected to increase the efficiency of logistics companies with features such as being lower for easy access and transition to the cargo area.
A key focus for Flexis will be its software. By learning factors such as routes and charging needs, the platform aims to simplify the experience for drivers who have been changing jobs for several years. Facilitating training can also improve company efficiency.
Renault and Volvo will own a 90 percent stake in Flexis with an investment of 300 million euros. Shipping company CMA CGM Group will manage 10 percent. Flexis CEO Philippe Divry said the vans will target markets beyond North America and Europe.
Electric commercial vehicles are expected to grow 40 percent annually in Europe. This is of great importance for Flexis, which wants to become the “Tesla of commercial vehicles”. However, it is unclear when the company will present its first model.
