For Capcom’s new game, producer Masato Kumazawa has made some welcome announcements for series fans. Kumazawa stated that he took into account feedback from previous games focused on action. The new game, Resident Evil Requiem, will emphasize horror elements and return the series to its classic survival horror roots. The producer detailed his plans to keep players constantly on edge throughout the game.
Resident Evil Requiem: Horror and Action Balance
Kumazawa stated that he values player feedback and is open to criticism. Comments that some previous Resident Evil games were too focused on action influenced this decision. The producer emphasized that they will prioritize the Resident Evil Requiem experience and focus on classic survival horror mechanics. However, he added that this doesn’t mean the game will consist of constant moments of fear.

Kumazawa stated that the balance of tension and action was crucial when planning the game’s progression and plot, noting that even a horror film requires slower-paced scenes from time to time. These slower scenes allow the tension to build until the next major shock. Therefore, the team aimed to maximize the impact of the scary moments by interspersing them with short moments of action or relief that distract players from the constant fear. This precise sequencing will be key to keeping players constantly on edge throughout the game.
Resident Evil Requiem’s new protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, was designed as a more timid and easily frightened character than previous protagonists in the series. Kumazawa believes this design will allow players to connect more deeply with the character and heighten the horror element. Players will feel the tension more intensely by witnessing the protagonist’s helplessness and reactions. He also hinted that the mysterious “stalker” enemy pursuing Grace will reveal surprises regarding their intentions and motivations.
