According to the published report, Waymo’s driverless vehicles reduce pedestrian and cyclist collisions by 82% to 92% and injury accidents by 96% compared to human drivers. It is also stated that serious injuries are reduced by 85%.
Robotaxi are exactly 25 times safer
The company’s Level 4 autonomous vehicles have been operating in Phoenix since 2019. Waymo expanded this operation to San Francisco in 2022, Los Angeles in 2023 and Austin in 2024. Test drives have begun in Atlanta by 2025.

During this period, robotaxis have traveled a total of 91 million kilometers. The company created a statistical sample that allows comparison with human drivers with this long-distance travel data. Accordingly, injury accidents have significantly decreased.
A 96% decrease in injuries at intersections and an 85% decrease in serious injury accidents was recorded. We can say that Waymo’s technological approach is also among the prominent elements.
While Tesla is developing a system that works only with cameras, Waymo prefers a more expensive but multi-layered structure. Vehicles equipped with radar and LiDAR technologies in addition to cameras benefit from more data in terms of environmental perception. The company argues that this method is more beneficial for safe driving.
With the data it disclosed, Waymo has also statistically demonstrated that autonomous vehicles can increase safety in urban transportation. So what do you think about this subject? You can easily share your opinions with us in the comments section below.
