In the final weeks of last year, significant news surfaced about Russia working on two different gaming consoles. While Russia is known as a technologically advanced nation, the field of gaming console development requires expertise and years of experience. Now, Russia has admitted that neither of the two consoles they are developing is particularly powerful. Here are the details…
Two different approaches: Physical and cloud-based console
Russia acknowledges that it cannot compete with current gaming powerhouses like the PS5 and Xbox Series. As such, one of the consoles they are developing is powered by the Elbrus processor. While Elbrus processors are designed primarily for critical infrastructure and defense applications, they fall short in delivering competitive gaming performance. Russian authorities openly admitted that this console is not capable of competing with the current generation of devices.
The second device, however, offers a markedly different approach. Priced at an affordable $45, this device is centered around a cloud-based gaming platform called Fog Play. Users with high-performance computers can rent their systems to the platform, allowing others to play games with lower system requirements. However, this device also appears to fall short of appealing to serious gaming enthusiasts.
This initiative, which began in March following a directive from Russian President Vladimir Putin, aimed to establish locally produced devices and gaming ecosystems. However, officials like Anton Gorelkin have now admitted that these consoles cannot reach the level of a PS5 or Xbox Series. Gorelkin stated that the primary goal of these consoles is to promote and popularize local games.
