Samsung unveils a two-way satellite connectivity system!

Ana sayfa / Smartphones

With the latest technologies, some tech giants introduce new satellite features and improvements. At first, we saw that Apple launched satellite connectivity on iPhone 14 series in September. Now, the following step is coming from Samsung. The South Korean company announced the 5G NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks) modem technology that allows two-way direct communication between smartphones and satellites, especially in remote areas. Here are the details about Samsung’s two-way satellite connectivity system

5G NTN modem technology to power two-way direct satellite communication

Samsung’s latest modem technology aims to allow users to send and receive text messages, calls, and data even when they are not connected to a mobile cellular network nearby. According to the announcement, Samsung is planning to launch this technology within the future Exynos chipsets to improve 5G satellite communications and pave the way for the 6G-driven Internet of Everything (IoE) era.

Thanks to the new 5G NTN technology, people can communicate with others via their Galaxy devices, regardless of mountains, deserts, or oceans. Especially, the tech giant focuses on communication in critical situations in remote areas. Samsung explains, “NTN uses satellites to enable 2-way interaction over mountains, deserts or in the middle of the ocean, eliminating communications blind spots.”

Min Goo Kim, Executive Vice President of CP (Communication Processor) Development at Samsung Electronics, said, “This milestone builds on our rich legacy in wireless communications technologies, following the introduction of the industry’s first commercial 4G LTE modem in 2009 and the industry’s first 5G modem in 2018. Samsung aims to take the lead in advancing hybrid terrestrial-NTN communications ecosystems worldwide in preparation for the arrival of 6G.“

Samsung also points out some plans about the NB-IoT NTN technology, “Additionally, Samsung plans to secure a standardized NB-IoT NTN technology for use in its next-generation modem platforms. With integrated satellite connectivity, Samsung’s NB-IoT solutions will eliminate the need for a separate high-power wireless antenna chip inside smartphones, providing mobile device makers with much greater design flexibility.”
