Smart assistants generated considerable excitement in their initial launches, and new features continue to attract user attention. However, a new survey reveals that the way Siri and other voice assistants are used hasn’t changed much since 2018. Most people still use voice assistants for five primary purposes. Here are the details.
The New Siri Has Been Long-Awaited
Since its launch, Siri was widely hailed as the worst smart assistant. Apple’s announcements of new features at WWDC 2024 subsequently dispelled any prejudice against Siri. However, the company was later accused of misleading advertising for these ads. The timing of promised Siri upgrades has also been pushed back.

While we haven’t yet seen all the Siri features listed, a survey has revealed that users have been using five core features since 2018 and haven’t adapted to the new features. According to a YouGov survey, the majority of smart assistant usage is still for the same five basic tasks:
- Check the weather: 59%
- Play music: 51%
- Look up an answer online: 47%
- Set a timer/alarm: 40%
- Call someone hands-free: 39%
While most people appear satisfied with their current usage habits, 10% said digital assistants aren’t as smart as they expected. This suggests they’d hoped for more challenging tasks. The survey also reveals frustration with voice assistants not understanding what they’re asking and not providing accurate answers.
