A new technology is being developed to address one of the most serious problems experienced by diabetic patients: the loss of sensation in the feet. Researchers in Switzerland aim to help patients regain sensation in their feet with their smart sock project for diabetes.

This condition, known as diabetic neuropathy, affects more than half of patients. Injuries to the feet due to the loss of sensation can go unnoticed and lead to serious complications. Furthermore, balance problems can make walking difficult, increasing the risk of falls.

Mynerva, a company born out of ETH Zurich, has developed this special sock, called “Leia.” Pressure sensors located at the bottom of the sock instantly map the foot’s ground pressure during walking. This data is converted into electrical signals by a small processing unit within the sock.

These converted signals are transmitted directly to the wearer’s healthy nerves via electrodes integrated into the fabric. This allows the wearer to feel their footing again. The technology also promises to reduce pain caused by nerve damage (neuropathic). Leia is currently in development and is expected to be commercially available in 2027.
