Sony launches public beta test of 4K cloud streaming for PlayStation 5
Beta testers can choose between 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 2160p (4K) streaming resolutions. The service automatically loads your cloud saves so you can easily pick up where you left off in a game. The beta includes major PS5 titles like God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Fortnite, Destiny 2, Resident Evil Village Death Stranding and Returnal. Sony says additional games will be added over time.
Sony first announced plans to test PS5 cloud gaming features in June, but details like 4K streaming were not previously known. 4K game streaming helps reduce compression artifacts when streaming at lower resolutions. The higher resolution streaming provides a more accurate image even on 1080p displays.
The public beta marks a renewed push into cloud gaming for Sony after the limited success of PlayStation Now. Sony recently went on a hiring spree for cloud gaming positions, suggesting the company has big plans for the technology. The 4K streaming capability highlights Sony’s ambition to make PS5 cloud gaming a premier feature.
Sony revealed an upcoming handheld console with the code name Project Q for PlayStation streaming. However, it’s still uncertain whether the Q handheld will support PS5 cloud gaming or if streaming will be limited to the PS5 console during the beta.
