Sony is allegedly the victim of a hacking attack. The cybercrime gang called Ransomed.vc reported that it hacked all of Sony’s systems as part of a massive ransom attack. It was stated that user data, especially PlayStation, was in danger.
Hacking attempt on all Sony systems and data for sale
Ransomed.vc, which has been very active since last month, claims to have successfully compromised “all Sony systems”. Interestingly, however, it said it would not receive payment from Sony. It said it would sell company and user data to third parties on dark web forums.
“We have successfully compromised all Sony systems and since Sony is unwilling to pay, we will not hold them to ransom and will sell the data,” the statement said. Sony has so far not commented on the data breach.
Ransomed.vc has given the company and third-party buyers until September 28. It is not known what will happen if the data is not sold by that date. However, there is the potential to unlock Sony systems for free.
It is not yet clear whether the attack is real. However, the ransom group claims to have accessed all of Sony’s systems. This suggests that many details, from users’ personal information to financial data, may have been leaked.
In a similar hack attempt in 2011, Sony leaked the personal information of 77 million PlayStation Network users. The company then recovered user data at a cost of over 100 million dollars. The latest attempt seems to be one of the biggest attacks on the gaming world.
