The world’s most popular online music service has taken a step that will fundamentally change the user experience. Spotify’s new Playlist feature, which reduces the dominance of algorithms, gives users complete control over music selection. This innovation, which entered beta on December 11th, blends artificial intelligence with personal preferences.
What does Spotify’s new Playlist feature offer?
Starting in New Zealand, the “Prompted Playlist” era allows users to describe what they want to listen to in writing. The system combines these commands not only in real-time but also with the user’s entire listening history from “day one” to deliver pinpoint results.

The most striking aspect of this feature is its transparency. Under each song in the created playlist, there is a short explanation of why the AI chose that particular track. This allows users to understand the algorithm’s logic and better optimize their next commands.
Users can get inspiration from the Ideas tab and also have their playlists updated with new songs at regular intervals. Currently only available in English, this feature is the latest addition to the “user-controlled algorithm” trend started by Meta and TikTok.
