Subaru has given the first hint of its long-awaited return to performance enthusiasts. The brand has released a teaser image of an all-electric hot hatch concept that will usher in the next-generation STI models. This is an exciting development that comes nearly three and a half years after the gas-powered WRX STI was discontinued.
Subaru Hints at an Electric Hot Hatch
Subaru upset fans in March 2022 when it announced plans to discontinue the gasoline-powered version of the WRX STI due to emissions restrictions and the shift toward electric vehicles. At the time, the company stated that it was exploring opportunities for the next-generation WRX STI, including an electrified version, but confirmed that it would not be built on the current WRX platform.
Now, the anticipated return is approaching. Subaru’s latest teaser confirms that the new electric hot hatch, dubbed the Performance-E STI concept, will usher in the brand’s next-generation vehicles.
The preview image released offers clues about Subaru’s new design language:
- LED Lights: The LED headlights with three thin lines are striking.
- Sporty Silhouette: The vehicle features a sportier roofline compared to the previously previewed internal combustion engine (ICE) version.
While Subaru is currently keeping technical details under wraps, it states that the new electric hot hatch will feature a “design that reflects the brand’s heritage” and offer a “comfortable, spacious interior with a driver-friendly layout.” It is also reported that it will be equipped with new technologies that will deliver “intuitive, exciting driving experiences.”
Subaru will unveil the new STI concepts at the Japan Mobility Show later this month. Subaru President Atsushi Osaki will share more information about the new models at a press conference on October 29th (JST).
The brand’s stand at the show will feature the Trailseeker, Subaru’s second global electric vehicle, alongside the Performance-E STI concept and a second STI concept believed to feature an internal combustion engine. Also on display will be the more robust Forester Wilderness and Outback Wilderness prototypes, as well as a nostalgic 1982 Subaru GL Family Huckster.
With this new electric hot hatch, Subaru joins other automakers like Hyundai, Volkswagen, and Kia in offering electric performance models.
