TEI Advances Critical Milestones for GÖKBEY and KIZILELMA Engines
TUSAŞ Engine Industries (TEI) has reached a critical stage in the development of Turkey’s indigenous aviation engines, specifically for the GÖKBEY utility helicopter and the KIZILELMA unmanned combat aerial vehicle. Speaking at TEKNOFEST in Şanlıurfa, TEI General Manager Mahmut Faruk Akşit confirmed that the TS1400 turboshaft engine has achieved flight maturity. As part of an intensive certification effort, the company is currently conducting parallel tests on eight different units to satisfy international standards. The project aims to secure full type certification by 2027, which will pave the way for the serial production and widespread integration of the TS1400 into the GÖKBEY helicopter platform.
- The TEI-TS1400 engine has reached flight maturity and is undergoing rigorous testing for 2027 type certification.
- TEI plans to deliver the first TF6000 turbofan engine to Baykar for testing between late 2026 and early 2027.
- The TF6000 serves as a foundational technology demonstrator for future powerplants, including the engine for the KAAN fighter jet.

GÖKBEY Approaches Serial Production Readiness
The TEI-TS1400 engine, which marked its maiden flight with the GÖKBEY helicopter on April 19, 2023, is engineered to provide 1,400 SHP of takeoff power. While the engine has successfully completed initial flight trials, the current focus remains on meeting the stringent requirements for mass production. By running eight engines simultaneously in testing chambers, TEI is gathering the comprehensive data necessary to ensure reliability for the Turkish Armed Forces. Once the type certification process concludes in 2027, the engine will transition into full-scale serial production, reducing Turkey’s reliance on foreign propulsion systems for its indigenous helicopter fleet.
TF6000 Delivery Schedules are Being Finalized
In addition to rotorcraft advancements, TEI is accelerating its progress on the TF6000 turbofan engine, a project vital for the KIZILELMA program. Akşit announced that the initial prototype is slated for delivery to Baykar for ground and integration tests by the end of 2026 or early 2027. The TF6000 is designed to deliver 6,000 lbf of thrust and features an architecture that supports an afterburner variant. This engine represents a significant technological leap for Turkish aerospace, establishing the design maturity required for future, higher-thrust propulsion systems.

Advanced Technologies are Being Developed for KAAN
Beyond its immediate use in the KIZILELMA, the TF6000 project functions as a primary technology demonstrator for the national combat aircraft, KAAN. TEI is leveraging the development of the TF6000’s sub-systems—such as its compressor, combustion chamber, and turbine modules—to refine the design philosophy for future fighter engines. This incremental approach allows engineers to validate high-performance components before scaling them up. Furthermore, the company has set an ambitious target to initiate the operation of the more powerful TF10000 engine before the end of 2027, effectively building a roadmap for Turkey’s self-sufficiency in high-performance jet propulsion.
