The popular messaging app Telegram was blocked due to personal data breaches and national security concerns. The Iraqi Ministry of Communications, which made the decision to block, announced that the app would be permanently closed to access.
Telegram has been permanently blocked in Iraq!
Like worldwide, in Iraq, where Telegram is widely used, the hosting of malicious activities forced various measures to be taken. Having detected that serious information such as citizens’ identity information, clear addresses, and even family connections were shared in some channels within the app, the Ministry justified shutting down the app entirely, accusing it of abusing this sensitive data. Telegram, which chose to ignore the requests sent during the process leading to the decision, made this decision necessary.
The only problem encountered in the process leading to the blocking decision was not just “personal data breach.” The Iraqi Ministry of Communications also discovered that the Telegram application was used by various terrorist organizations and various malicious groups. The Ministry stated that the app was frequently used to announce planned attacks, emphasizing that the issue constituted a national security threat.
The Iraqi Ministry of Communications expressed that they respect freedom of communication as long as it does not threaten the personal data and security of its citizens. On the Telegram side, no statement has been made yet regarding the issue.
