Leaked spy photos from China show a camouflaged version undergoing road tests, providing some clues about its size and design. While details are still kept under wraps, it is expected that the electric pickup will prioritize autonomous driving and comfort compared to standard pickups. It will become a rival against Tesla Cybertruck.
BYD aims to play on the global stage with its first electric pickup model
BYD’s move into electric pickups comes at a time when the segment is starting to change globally. For example, Tesla introduced its Cybertruck model at the end of last year. Similarly, Chinese brand Radar unveiled its RD6 electric truck in China and Southeast Asia. Rivian is also entering this market with its T1 model.
The BYD truck is particularly targeting the international market. Restrictions in China categorize trucks differently from passenger vehicles due to highway speed limits, usage durations, and urban access limitations. This situation seems to have influenced BYD’s expansion into the global market.
The motor specifications of the BYD pickup are unclear at this point. However, for comparison, the Cybertruck comes in three versions. The Rear-Wheel model has an acceleration time of 6.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, while the All-Wheel Drive model achieves this in 4.1 seconds. The top model, Cyberbeast, does it in 2.6 seconds.
