For a long time, we have been hearing news that electric cars will dominate the market in the near future and become part of our lives. Now we can say that we have reached the future we envisioned. The transformation has exceeded expectations, not only in China, the United States, and Northern European countries, but also worldwide. Here are the details…
2023 can be called the year of electric cars!
According to a study shared by Counterpoint today, electric car sales in the United States in the first quarter of 2023 increased by over 79% compared to the previous year. Thanks to this growth, the United States surpassed Germany and became the world’s second-largest electric car market after China.

Looking at the types of electric cars preferred by people in the United States, we see that 81% opted for fully electric vehicles, while 19% chose plug-in hybrid models that run on a combination of gasoline and electricity. Of course, it is worth noting that the location and infrastructure development also have a significant impact on these preferences.
One of the reasons for this surge can be attributed to the US government extending the $7,500 tax credit, which was previously offered by Tesla, GM, Ford, Stellantis, Rivian, and Volkswagen for a total of 20 electric models, to other brands such as Hyundai, Nissan, BMW, Audi, and Volvo.
However, when we look at market shares, excluding Tesla, the total sales of all other electric car brands only reach a break-even point. In other words, although there is a general inclination towards all brands, Tesla continues to maintain a clear lead.
The top-selling fully electric models are as follows:
- Tesla Model Y
- Tesla Model 3
- Chevrolet Bolt EUV
- Volkswagen ID.4
- Chevrolet Bolt
The top-selling plug-in hybrid models are as follows:
- Jeep Wrangler
- Jeep Grand Cherokee
- Toyota RAV4
- BMW X5
- Chrysler Pacifica
